The “Waelrant” youth choir, founded in 1968, with about 50 singers aged 16-25 years, is part of a choir school with 8 different levels for singers of all ages. The choir is named after the Flemish composer and music teacher Hubertus Waelrant (1517 – 1595). “Waelrant” regularly participates in festivals and competitions and has won several awards. Most recently, they won first place in two categories at the 2021 World Choir Games in their hometown of Antwerp. The close friendship among the singers clearly contributes to the choir’s success. The choir sings in many different styles to give the young singers a broad musical horizon. For almost 30 years, the choir has been directed by Marleen De Boo. In addition to her work as choir director, she teaches aspiring choir directors at various conservatories. However, the work with amateurs of all ages is especially close to her heart.
