Georgian folk music is renowned throughout the world. Georgian polyphonic singing was even declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001. The boys’ choir “Mdzlevari” was founded 28 years ago and is now considered one of the best ensembles in the country. The repertoire consists of over 200 traditional songs. The choir aims to preserve the tradition by training as many young talented singers as possible. Participation in numerous choral festivals has enriched the musical styles of the choir in many ways. In addition to Georgian folk music, the repertoire now includes new compositions and pieces from other cultures. The Onashvili family is known for its musical tradition, which is passed down from generation to generation. “Mdzlevari” was founded by Tariel Onashvili. His son, Kakhaber Onashvili, is now the artistic director of the choir and passes on the old melodies and songs from his family to the young singers. Besides being a choir director, he is himself a singer in various ensembles of Georgian vocal music.
