Words of welcome to the EJCF 2021 by Federal Council Alain Berset

The European Festival of Youth Choirs Basel serves as an inspiration to all of us in these difficult times for a number of reasons.

First, the festival will actually take place – despite the adversity caused by the pandemic, especially for choirs. Secondly, it brings young people together for a joyful event, boosting the morale of those youngsters who suffer particularly from the unfortunately necessary social distancing measures. And finally, the organisers’ exemplary resilience, perseverance and idealism are qualities that make me optimistic that we will reclaim cultural life and it will again enrich our lives. This is something we can look forward to. During this pandemic, we have all felt how much we miss the live experience of cultural events, not least musical productions that touch us particularly deeply.
